Who operates this service

CheckThePlate is operated by an individual trading as CheckThePlate, not by a registered company. Contact contact@checktheplate.co.uk for any question about these terms, a report you have bought, or a refund.

What this service is

CheckThePlate shows records held about a UK vehicle by third parties. The free check reports DVLA vehicle and tax data and DVSA MOT history, including test results, advisory and failure entries, and recorded odometer readings. Where a paid report is offered, it additionally reports records supplied by licensed data providers.

What this service is not

A report describes records, not a vehicle. It is not a mechanical inspection, a valuation you can rely on, a guarantee of a vehicle's condition, or advice about whether to buy. It does not replace viewing and inspecting the vehicle, and it does not replace an independent mechanical inspection.

Records can be incomplete, delayed or wrong at source. An absent record means nothing was returned to us, not that nothing happened. A check that reports no insurance write-off, for example, means no such record was returned — not that the vehicle has never been damaged.

Accuracy

We pass on what the data sources return and do not independently verify it. Where the report derives something — an average, a trend in MOT advisories, an indicative repair cost, or a vehicle tax figure — that derivation is our interpretation of the underlying records, is indicative only, and may be wrong. Tax figures use published rates and are not a quotation from DVLA.

If you believe a report contains an error, email us. Where the error came from a data source we will tell you which, so you can raise it with them.

Free checks

Free checks are provided as they are, without any warranty. We may change, limit or withdraw the free service at any time. Automated or bulk access is not permitted, and we may rate limit or block use that threatens the service or our access to the underlying data sources.

Paid reports

The price shown at the point of purchase is the price you pay, in pounds sterling, including any applicable tax. A report is delivered immediately after payment is confirmed.

Because a report is digital content delivered immediately, you will be asked to agree to immediate delivery and to acknowledge that you lose the 14 day right to cancel under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 once delivery begins. If you do not agree to that, do not buy a report.

If a report fails to deliver, is substantially incomplete because of a fault on our side, or you were charged more than once, email us and we will refund you. We do not refund because a report's contents were not what you hoped: a report that correctly shows no adverse records has done what it was bought to do.

Where reports are sold as a multi-pack, unused reports expire six months after purchase.

Your responsibilities

Liability

Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected.

Subject to that, we are not liable for any loss arising from a decision you took in reliance on a report, including the purchase of a vehicle. Where we are found liable in connection with a paid report, our liability is limited to the amount you paid for that report.

Changes

We may change these terms. The version published when you use the service or buy a report is the version that applies.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction.
