What you can see in an MOT history
MOT records help you understand how a vehicle has performed at its recorded tests. CheckThePlate brings the test dates, results and mileage into one report, alongside the advisory and failure wording supplied in the records.
- Test results: recorded passes and failures, with their dates.
- Advisories and defects: issues recorded at each available test.
- Mileage: odometer readings and units recorded by the tester.
- Expiry dates: where supplied with the test record.
How to use the report before viewing a car
Look through more than the most recent result. Repeated advisories can prompt useful questions about maintenance. Compare the latest recorded mileage with the seller’s advertised mileage, allowing for use since the test.
Ask the seller for supporting service or repair records when you see an issue you want explained. The MOT record alone does not establish whether an advisory has since been addressed.
What an MOT check cannot tell you
A pass is the result of a particular test, not an assurance about the car’s condition today. MOT history does not show outstanding finance, stolen vehicle markers or insurance write-offs. Those checks are not included in this service.
DVLA vehicle and tax details are temporarily unavailable. Available MOT records still appear in your report; missing information is labelled.
Data source and coverage
Our MOT records are retrieved from DVSA’s MOT history service. Coverage depends on the vehicle and records returned. No available history should not be interpreted as evidence that a vehicle has no problems.
